A bloom for every birthday

Display of 12 pictures, each showing a different flower from each month. The pictures are displayed in a library and books can be seen in shelving

"A Bloom for every birthday’ showcases the flowers that are associated with each birth month. Using real plants that have been lightly pressed and digitised, the project has taken a year. A year of collecting and gathering (and sometimes buying) the flowers that represent the specific month. The hardest plant to get was the Lily of the Valley. My mum had one so dug it put and posted it to me - I pressed and printed the leaves and flowers and then planted it. I'm pleased to see it's about to flower!

Historically, flowers have been given meaning and they symbolise positive traits, strengths or events they are have become known for. They are often associated with the month they are found growing and it;s a great way of deciding what flowers to give someone - either because of the flower’s meaning or because it’s their birth month.

Using real flowers, the exhibition displays how these blooms are transformed by the digital process and preserves them beyond their final bloom. While printing can change their colour slightly, no plants colours have been changed in the digital process. The colours you see are the actual colours.

The exhibition is part of the Highams Park Arts Trail and is up in the Hale End Library from 1st - 17th May. Click here to see the whole exhibition line up, which includes exhibitions, open houses and events - https://highamspark.london/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HP-Arts-Trail-Booklet-2026.pdf

cyanotype floral fabric picture

I can't do an exhibition without a bit of cyanotype! These were actually displayed last year but I would rather they were exhibited again than sit in a room, hidden. Cyanotype is a photographic process, where fabric is treated with the solution and put into the sun. Where the treated is exposed to the UV rays of the sun, the fabric turns blue. It's a magical process and you never quite know what you're going to get. Each picture is truly unique and captures that exact moment.
